Very challenging but wonderful route. Departure from the Citelli Refuge passing through Serra delle concazze

and then get on a difficult and poorly signposted uphill route to Pizzi Deneri where, once you reach the top,

you will find the Etneo Observatory with an incredible view towards the central Craters of Etna.

The ridge of Pizzi Deneri is the result of eruptions from the Elliptic period (from about 50,000

about 30,000 years ago) which reaches an altitude of 2847 m.s.l.m. The name \”Pizzi Deneri\” comes from the

Sicilian dialect word \”rina\”, with which volcanic sand is indicated. This ridge in the past was called “Pizzi di

Rineri \”. Over time, and probably due to transcription errors between the dialect and Italian, we passed from

\”Pizzi di Rineri ” to“ Pizzi Deneri ”.

The route has a total height difference of about 1,100 meters between ascent and descent and allows, in the

return phase downhill towards Rifugio Citelli, to arrive on the top of Monte Frumento delle Concazze, imposing

and suggestive secondary volcanic cone, at 2,151 meters above sea level, one of the most adventitious craters

of the entire Etna area, colonized on the lower slopes by birch and larch pines.

The tour begins with a visit to the suggestive Ancient Noto which has the charm of an abandoned city, where the city walls, access gates, castles and towers, houses are still visible humble and palaces, monasteries and churches, caves, tombs, Hellenistic sacred areas, all built in the white limestone of the Iblei.

There flourishing vegetation and three centuries of neglect make the site as fairytale. It was inhabited from prehistoric times until the fateful earthquake of 1693. After the terrible earthquake that destroyed the south-east part of Sicily, the ancient Noto was abandoned and rebuilt on the site where it is today.

Surrounded by its ancient walls on a rocky spur called Monte Alveria, Noto Antica has preserved its charm and its beauty.

The route continues downhill, towards the Cava canyon del carosello, where among the lakes and streams, we will visit ancient caves transformed into rock tanneries and mills. The splendid quarry, where flows one of the most important rivers of south-eastern Sicily, the Asinaro, fed by perennial springs, still retains more than 50 ancient rock tanneries active since 1400, as well as a casket of exceptional biodiversity.

The extensive karst plateaus of the Iblei Mountains characterize the landscape of the southeastern tip of Sicily,

straddling the provinces of Ragusa and Syracuse. It is above all in the latter that the plateau takes on

spectacular aspects due to the presence of deep fractures, called \”caves\”, which furrow the

edges. These are canyons produced by the erosion of the waterways that flow still their bottom, sometimes

with a superb appearance as happens in the case of the Cavagrande del Cassibile Nature Reserve, one of the

most majestic and evocative, today protected as a nature reserve, it was the seat in the Palaeolithic era of

inhabited settlements.

Cava Grande is almost totally known for the small lakes that can be reached from the “scala cruci” path from

belvedere descends to the valley floor. This approximately 2.5 km long route winds through hairpin bends and

steep stairs with a total height difference of about 250 meters.

Visitors will have the opportunity to go down directly to the area of the wonderful lakes with a stop to refresh

themselves and bath in the clear water of the quarry.

This path, one of the most evocative and popular in the territory of the Park, is located on the north-eastern side of Etna, a few hundred meters from the historic Rifugio Citelli. The route, which is of exceptional interest both from a geological and botanical point of view, runs in a ring starting from the forest barrier at an altitude of 1,660 m. above sea level for about four kilometers.

Along the path, which has 6 observation points, there are clearings rich in endemic species. You can admire the Monte Frumento, which represents one of the largest adventitious cones of Etna. The great geological interest is instead represented by the imposing lava flow of 1865, which gave rise to the Sartorius Mountains (in honor and in memory of the scholar Sartorius von Walterhausen, who was the first to map the most important eruptions of Etna), characterized from the typical “buttonhole” alignment of the eruptive cones.

The majestic flow extends for about eight square kilometers, with an average thickness of the lavas of over 12 m; the surface morphology is very bumpy due to the presence of lava and scoriaceous blocks.

The starting point is less than 2 km from the Sapienza refuge along the road connected with Zafferana Etnea at

the crossing point with the provincial road that rises from Pedara-Tarderia.

The first part of the path winds up rapidly through reforestation by Pino Laricio, characterized from a pavement

covered with shapeless volcanic paving stones. looking south-east, you can observe the numerous

adventitious cones and flows lava flows originating from the fissure and the eruptive vents, almost circular in

shape, of the eruption of 1792.

Once on the crest, at the height of the Canalone dei Faggi, you look out over the Vulcano-tectonic depression

known as Valle del Bove, a wonderful panoramic view that gives the visitor the opportunity to observe towards

the whole valley submerged by the ancient and more recent lava flows. From here is the mountain peak

Zoccolaro, Monte Calanna, the Deneri lace up to the summit of Etna where the central craters stand out.

Departure towards Etna north and continue on foot. The itinerary goes up the lava flow of 1865 that gave birth to the Monti Sartorius , an eruption that lined up seven button craters and which today characterize the landscape.

It is an easy path, lasting a total of about two hours, obtained on an ancient track used by shepherds which allows you to discover the eruptive systems of the Sartorius Mountains and the most extensive birch forest of Etna.

Visit of the Grotta dei Ladroni: a small lava flow tunnel that opens into a prehistoric flow near the Citelli refuge. According to a legend, it was used in the second half of the 18th century as a refuge by a band of brigands from Palermo. The four, however daring, it seems that they were not assisted by a lucky star, so much so that their criminal enterprises very often ended ingloriously.
